Tuition Fee Vote

Tuition Fee Vote

Last week was a tough week. There was a vote on raising tuition fees and I wrestled with what is, to me, a very important issue.    I voted against the rise as I did not believe the Government had won the argument. I believe that the higher fees create a perception of significantly higher debt, of up to forty or fifty thousand pounds, that could put those from backgrounds such as my own off going to university altogether. I fear that this will affect social mobility, especially given that ev...

Campaign to make the Humber a Centre for Renewable Energy

Campaign to make the Humber a Centre for Renewable Energy

A new campaign has been launched by local MP Andrew Percy and Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers to make the Humber a centre for renewable energy. The pan-Humber vision would see the region become a centre for renewable technology such as marine, biofuels, offshore wind and turbine manufacture.     During a debate in the House of Commons Andrew highlighted rivers such as the Ayr, Ouse, Trent and parts of the Humber as being some of the most tidal in the country. Charles Hendry, Minister of State fo...

Educational Importance of Goole Moor

Educational Importance of Goole Moor

On Wednesday I spoke in a debate in Parliament about Outdoor Learning. As a former school teacher I recognise just how important a contribution outdoor learning can make to our children's education and development.   I spoke about the opportunities for local schools on Goole Moor. It was only a few weeks ago that I met with Natural England to highlight opportunities for local schools on the nature reserve. Following from that I have had discussions with the headteacher at Goole High School abo...

Andrew Leads Festive Season Campaign to tackle Bowel Cancer

Local MP Andrew Percy is leading a campaign this Christmas to save the lives of constituents who could be at risk of bowel cancer. The MP, who is an official Parliamentary Voice for the Beating Bowel Cancer charity, is hoping to raise the profile of this disease among constituents and is calling on residents to make themselves aware of the symptoms of this cancer. Another charity, Lynn's Bowel Cancer Campaign, have also provided Andrew with a Cut-Out-And-Keep Guide for constituents to the sym...

Santa In Specs Event

Santa In Specs Event

I had great fun attending the prize giving for the Santa in Specs competition at Michael James Opticians in Goole this Saturday. Gary, who owns and runs the business, runs the competition for local schools with the support of Nikon who provide the prizes for the winning children and schools.   The competition sees children from local schools submit art work of Santa wearing some specs which needless to say provides some very amusing entries. I think on one of them the specs had been modelled o...

Andrew Backs Safe Standing at Glanford Park

Brigg & Goole MP Andrew Percy has co-signed a ten-minute rule bill that will give football clubs the freedom to build, or maintain existing, safe standing sections in their stadia if they choose to. The bill calls for a minimum safety criteria to be established and must be met for standing sections in football stadia.   The ten-minute rule bill was introduced by Don Foster MP for Bath. The motion cites countries around the world that have used new technologies to ensure that standing secti...

Andrew Pushes Grandparents and Grandchildren's Rights Bill

Andrew Pushes Grandparents and Grandchildren's Rights Bill

Local MP Andrew Percy last week introduced a Ten-Minute Rule Bill which would give grandparents more rights to see their grandchildren. The bill was inspired by Dorothy Fagge of Saxby who spent a considerable sum of money trying to gain access to her grandchildren after she lost touch with them through bereavement and divorce. The proposals call for more rights for grandchildren and grandparents which would make it easier to gain access and in doing so would reduce the cost that it takes to g...

Andrew’s Expenses Available On-Line

My expenses for my first few months are now available on-line for you to view. The link is here http://www.parliamentary-standards.org.uk/default.aspx and if you have any questions on them please contact me. I am accountable to you for my expenses and as a result I try to keep them as low as possible.   The biggest claims this year have been to set up my Constituency and Westminster offices. In terms of the office in Goole, unlike my predecessor, I have rented a shop on one of the main shoppin...

Andrew Meets Natural England to Discuss Moor Opportunities

Andrew Meets Natural England to Discuss Moor Opportunities

Brigg & Goole MP Andrew Percy met with representatives of Natural England last Friday to discuss the future of the Goole and Thorne Moor, a designated National Nature Reserve. The site is of national importance and was last visited by Andrew during the recent fire which damaged a large section of Goole Moor. Andrew met with Natural England to view the damaged area a few months on and to discuss how the local community could make more use of the moors.   Andrew says, "It was great to be bac...
