Andrew Percy MP

Member of Parliament for Brigg & Goole and the Isle of Axholme

About Andrew Percy

I am the Conservative and Unionist MP for the Brigg and Goole constituency where I also live in the small village of Airmyn, near Goole. Our constituency covers parts of both East Yorkshire, where I was born and grew up, and North Lincolnshire where I also have strong work ties and family. I was born and raised in East Yorkshire and am the son of a school secretary and former foundry worker. I attended my local comprehensive school before going to Wyke Sixth Form College in Hull, and then on to University in York. Being local is important to me and it really is a privilege to represent an area where my family have lived for centuries.

Before getting elected to Parliament I was a local school teacher, most recently teaching in Scunthorpe at an Infant School. However, I am actually a Secondary History teacher and previously taught in some of the toughest schools in Hull. This was an incredibly rewarding and fantastic experience and I have made education and young people’s issues some of my top priorities in Parliament. I continue to serve as a School Governor and have also served as a Councillor, most recently as a Parish Councillor in Airmyn.

I made clear during my election campaign that I wanted to be a strong independent voice for our area and I meant it. I have never been afraid to speak up for our area, no matter who is in power. As your MP I am here to help you on any matter at all so please get in touch if you think I can be of assistance. I can't always guarantee that I will be successful but I will at least try my best.

I am also always keen to hear your views on local and national issues. So, whether you need help on a specific issue, or you simply want to share your views on a big issue, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You pay my wages so please make use of me!

Work in Parliament

Andrew was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for the Northern Powerhouse) at the Department for Communities and Local Government on July 2016 and served in this role until June 2017. His ministerial responsibilities included: the Northern Powerhouse, devolution deals, local growth, coastal communities, community rights (including pubs), local enterprise partnership (LEP) policy, enterprise zones, high streets, inward investment and infrastructure (including High Speed 2), European Regional Development Fund, and resilience and emergencies.

Prior to becoming a minister, Andrew had sat on the Health Select Committee and the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee. He has also played an active role in a number of All Party Parliamentary Groups, including the APPG Against Antisemitism, the APPG for Transatlantic Trade, and the APPG on Canada, to name a few. Additionally, Andrew was on the Speaker’s Panel of Chairs. Members of the Panel are appointed by the Speaker to chair Public Bill Committees and other general committees. They may also chair debates in Westminster Hall and act as temporary chairs of Committees of the whole House.

In September 2017, Andrew recommenced his role as the Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Canada and served in that role until 2019. Trade envoys engage with one or more emerging markets where substantial trade and investment opportunities have been identified by the UK government. They support the drive for economic growth by building on the UK’s existing relations with these markets and maximising bilateral trade, thereby generating real and long term benefits for the UK.

Andrew currently serves as the Chair of the APPG on Surrogacy and as Vice-Chair of the APPG Against Antisemitism. The APPG on Surrogacy's aim is to fully review our surrogacy laws, encourage and promote debate on the issues, facilitate further research into how surrogacy is conducted, bring the law into line with modern social realities, and encourage domestic surrogacy in the first instance. The APPG Against Antisemitism aims to combat antisemitism and help develop and seek implementation of effective public policy to combat antisemitism.
