Andrew Backs Safe Standing at Glanford Park

Brigg & Goole MP Andrew Percy has co-signed a ten-minute rule bill that will give football clubs the freedom to build, or maintain existing, safe standing sections in their stadia if they choose to. The bill calls for a minimum safety criteria to be established and must be met for standing sections in football stadia.

The ten-minute rule bill was introduced by Don Foster MP for Bath. The motion cites countries around the world that have used new technologies to ensure that standing sections are safe. Polls show that the areas are popular with fans and standing areas could help reduce ticket prices.

The MP spoke in Parliament raising the localism agenda; he said that what fans, and what the fans of Scunthorpe United are saying very clearly is, “Let us make our decision about what we want, and let us keep our terraces.”

Andrew Percy MP says, “I felt it important to back this bill because not only is Glanford Park within my constituency but many fans of Scunthorpe United also live in our area.

I have been contacted by a number of fans and they have made it clear that they want safe standing sections at Glanford Park and other football stadia. As long as minimum safety criteria are met then clubs should have the freedom to build safe standing sections in their grounds.

This is why I have backed the bill and I hope that it progresses into legislation.”
