Volunteer for Primary Futures

The Primary Futures initiative connects primary schools with inspirational volunteers from a range of career backgrounds. The aim of this program is to help primary age children make the connection between what they learn at school and how that relates to the world of work. Andrew reports, "As part of this programme, volunteers visit primary schools to talk to children about their careers. Schoolchildren will then learn about the variety of exciting careers on offer and how what they are learnin...

Euro Elections Next Thursday

Euro Elections Next Thursday

I have little or no interest in the Euro elections taking place next Thursday and it may not have escaped resident's attention that I have not been actively campaigning for them. Parliament should have delivered on the referendum result by now and we should have left the EU in March. It shouldn't come as a shock that lots of people who voted in the EU referendum will use the elections next week to send a message.  For what it's worth, I think people should vote in these elections, whatever their...

British Steel - Further Update

British Steel - Further Update

I am continuing to work with the local Council and other MPs on this matter. As I am sure residents will appreciate, there is a lot going on behind the scenes to try to resolve this which cannot be made public yet. Needless to say I genuinely believe that the Government and British Steel do want to resolve this issue and they are intensive discussions. The challenge is significant.  This morning myself and Nic Dakin met with Greybull Capital, who own British Steel, to get their perspective befor...

British Steel Update

British Steel Update

Residents may have seen the news of further issues with British Steel. We had hoped that the £100 million govt support announced recently would stabilise the issues. One of the many reasons I have consistently voted to deliver Brexit in a stable and sensible way is because British Steel have repeatedly stated they needed certainty to protect jobs. This was the same message from other local businesses. The company have now stated that that uncertainty is behind their current issues. There are oth...

Mental Health Awareness Week 2019

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. This year’s national campaign will also focus on body image - how we think and feel about our bodies and the impact that can have on our mental health. Andrew says, "Mental health problems can affect anyone at any time. Sadly, many of us feel unable to discuss our mental health issues. This week is an opportunity to encourage people to open up about their mental health and wellbeing." A number of events are taking place nationally to raise awareness of ...

Andrew visited Haxey on Saturday afternoon to see the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage display. Following the visit, Andrew said, "Back on the Isle this afternoon for the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage display. Well done to the Heritage Society for all they are doing to preserve the heritage of this part of the Isle. I've chatted to them about how we might be able to help them digistise some of their photos and documents etc etc. "Also had a really interesting chat about the history of the Isle ...

Epworth Primary IT Suite

Epworth Primary IT Suite

Andrew visited Epworth Primary earlier today to welcome the school's new IT suite. Andrew says, "Busy constituency day today but especially enjoyed my visit to open Epworth Primary School's new IT Suite. Very kind of the school to ask me to do the honour and great also to answer a few questions from the School Council. "The pupils previously had only iPads to use but now have a full IT Suite which the school tell me was paid for by the Government's special funding allocation. The kids told me ho...

M.E. Awareness Week 2019

M.E. Awareness Week began on Monday this week and will run until the International Awareness Day for M.E. on Sunday 12th May. Andrew says, "The week-long campaign aims to encourage awareness and understanding of M.E (myalgic encephalomyelitis), with this year’s campaign focusing on the “Real M.E”: the experience of people who suffer from the disease." The NHS website outlines the symptoms of M.E. as including: sleep problems, such as insomnia, muscle or joint pain; headaches; a sore throat or so...
