Steel Industry Meeting with PM

Andrew met with the Prime Minister today to discuss British Steel.

Andrew reports, "This afternoon myself and a cross-party delegation of MPs met with the Prime Minister to discuss the on-going issues with British Steel and the attempts to find a new buyer for the site. With the Government presently covering wages and the costs at the site, every effort is being made by the Government to secure the future of the site.

"The meeting was an opportunity for us to press home the importance of securing a future for British Steel and for the thousands of workers that rely upon the sites. In response, the Prime Minister again assured us that no stone would be left unturned and that the Government was, and remains, prepared to invest in the site with a new owner. EU and UK state aid rules require any investment to be on a commercial basis or else the Government cannot legally invest in the site and that is why a new owner is so vital.

"We pressed home the strategic importance of steel production here in the UK and also made clear that this is a vibrant and innovative industry with a future. The PM pledged her full support and could not have been clearer that everything that can be done is being done.

"Nobody can say with any certainty at this stage where this will end up but residents can rest assured that I will continue to work with MPs of all parties to ensure we can secure a future for British Steel."
