MPs Keep Up the Pressure on ScottishPower Cashback Scandal

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on ScottishPower’s Cashback Mis-Selling has continued their calls for an investigation and action in respect to the ScottishPower cashback scheme.

The cross-party group of MPs, which is chaired by Andrew, was formed to investigate a £75m mis-selling scandal involving a ScottishPower cashback scheme and recently held an evidence session.

Last week, the issue was raised for the third time during Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), by SNP MP and member of the APPG, Richard Arkless; who called on the Prime Minister to meet with members of the APPG to discuss this.

PowerPlan Company Ltd was set up by ScottishPower to issue warranties on white/brown goods (such as TVs, fridges, cookers, etc.) in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Cashback warranties were sold on these goods, meaning that if you didn’t claim on your warranty within 5 years they would give you the cash deposit back. These warranties were called PowerPlan, and a sub-company PowerPlan Company Ltd (PPCL) was set up to issue the warranties.

The scheme went under in 2004, following its sale to another retailer and ScottishPower refused to pay out on the cashback offer on the warranties. In 2004/5 thousands of people started calling in their cashback. These cashback warranties haven’t been paid, meaning that 625,000 customers across the UK have lost out on a combined £75m!

Andrew reports, “This is the third time this scandal has been raised with the Prime Minister in the house, including my question to him last June. Almost 1% of the UK’s population have been ripped off and deserve their money back!

During the recent evidence session, we heard shocking allegations of fraud, criminality and more. As such, we are determined to keep up the pressure. We agree with the Prime Minister’s statement that any alleged wrongdoing should be fully investigated and will look to meet with any relevant ministers to move this issue forward.

The APPG are currently compiling a report on the latest evidence we received and we are happy to hear from anyone affected by this.”

Richard Arkless MP, member for Dumfries and Galloway, asked the PM: “Last week ScottishPower refused to attend an evidence session with the cashback APPG where crucial new evidence was uncovered. As a former consumer litigator I am utterly convinced that over two thousand of my constituents and over half a million people in the UK are owed cashback from ScottishPower. Given this is a scandal of potentially huge proportions, will the Prime Minister agree to meet with me and the cross-party APPG to discuss how we can ensure that these ordinary hard working people receive the cashback they were promised from ScottishPower?”
