Brigg & Goole MP Andrew Percy has welcomed the Government’s decision to more than double its subsidy to the Post Office over the next four years.

The new Government has committed an additional £1.3bn of funding to avoid the mass Post Office closure programme planned by the previous Labour Government. The Coalition has also ruled out any further Post Office closure programme as occurred under the last Government which resulted in more than 4,000 Post Offices closing.

Andrew Percy MP says, “I am delighted this Government has made clear its commitment to our Post Offices, which are at the heart of our local communities, by investing over £1bn of extra money over the next four years.

Many of our local Post Offices were closed as part of the Labour Government’s Post Office closure programme including Wrawby, Eastoft and West Butterwick. The Coalition Government has cleared up the uncertainty by committing this money now which is a stark contrast to the dithering of the last Government.

The investment will help to reverse the years of decline and secure the long term future of the Post Office. For many of our rural communities, the existence of a Post Office also ensures that there is a local shop too. This is welcome news for many of our local communities during these difficult economic times.”
