Goole Hospital Update

Andrew has received the below update regarding Goole Hospital:

"I thought residents might like an update on a couple of issues related to Goole Hospital. Like most people locally, I really value our local hospital and have been contacted by a few residents in recent weeks raising some issues. I thought you might like an update on some of the issues.

Ophthalmic Department Biometry Machine.

This machine (used for cataract patients) is broken beyond repair and this has been raised by some residents. It has been out of action since before Christmas. The Trust now inform me that funding has been secured in this year’s capital budget to buy two new Biometry Machines, one for Goole Hospital and one for Grimsby. The Trust tell me they are completing the procurement with ophthalmologists. This is obviously good news and I have asked to be kept informed.

Brain Injury Unit Expansion

This is a very specialist unit which has plans to grow bed numbers at Goole Hospital. The Trust inform me that they are “looking at funding options for potential expansion in line with the STP needs for complex rehabilitation.” I’ll keep pushing on updates.

Vanguard Theatre

This is the temporary second operating theatre that was opened up over the winter period to increase the number of operations in Goole. The Trust say that, contrary to some rumours, the theatre has not cost ‘millions’, has paid for itself whilst helping the Trust reduce the surgery wait list by 3000. There was also a rumour that the mobile theatre was a threat to the permanent theatres in Goole Hospital or to staff. The Trust inform me, the Vanguard Theatre was only a temporary measure to deal with some of the issues they had, but that it is no threat to the two theatres at Goole or to any staff in the surgery division and that they plan to continue to make the uses of Goole’s permanent operating theatres more robust as part of their plans to make them a centre of excellence.

Heating System Upgrade

When I met the Trust at the end of last year, they told me of a £5 million project to upgrade the aged heating system. The Trust tell me that the feasibility studies are underway and that they should have completed the evaluation by the summer and will update me further then.

Mobile CT/MRI Scanner Breakdowns

This was raised by patients so please don’t shoot the messenger as I can only share what the Trust report back to me. The Trust tell me that they have lost 2 full days and 2 part days due to breakdowns since January 2018 which they say is not out of the ordinary for mobile scanners of this kind and that any lost days are replaced. They are of course aware that if impacted by the breakdown it is very annoying for patients."
