English National Anthem

Andrew is encouraging English sports fans and residents to add their name to a new petition calling for a National anthem for England.

The proposal for a new National anthem to be played when England and not Britain are being represented on the sporting field has passed its first stage in parliament, and following widespread polling support for the idea a new petition has been created to give people across the country the chance to show their support for the idea.

Opinion polls suggest the plan is a popular one with Sky Sports and Daily Mirror polls showing 62% and 71% respectively backing the plan. A further YouGov poll showed just 57% in favour and just 21% against in a poll which had Land of Hope and Glory coming out on top.

Other choices like Jerusalem, I Vow to Thee, My Country and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot have also been mooted.

Andrew said, “I would encourage people across our area who back the idea of a National anthem to be used by England to add their name to the petition. God Save the Queen is Britain’s anthem and should be kept for Britain, and just as England fans have the flag of St George so they should have a specifically English anthem.

I recently ran an on-line poll, with Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory topping the list. Final options for an English National anthem will be decided later but for now, it would be helpful to know the level of support for the idea.”

The petition is available to sign at: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/119904.
