Drax Power Station – Worlds First Carbon Capture from Biomass

Drax have informed me of the first capture of carbon dioxide using innovative technology at the Selby Power Station in their bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) pilot project. This is a fantastic achievement as it is the first time anywhere in the world that carbon dioxide has been captured from a 100% biomass feedstock i.e. burning wood pellets.

The pilot project was commissioned in November last year following a £400,000 investment by Drax in innovative carbon capture technology developed by C-Capture, a spin off company from the University of Leeds.

Throughout the trial, Drax will capture one tonne of carbon per day. Data being obtained about the CO2 capture process will continue to be analysed throughout the pilot to fully understand the potential of the technology and how it could be scaled up at Drax. If successful, the pilot project could enable Drax to become the world’s first carbon negative power station.
