D-Day 75

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the beginning of the Battle of Normandy.

Andrew says, "On the 6th June 1944, over 150,000 incredibly brave allied soldiers took part in the largest amphibious invasion in history. The D-Day landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, marked the beginning of the campaign to liberate Europe from the tyranny of Nazi Germany. 61,000 British troops took part in the operation, along with 73,000 Americans and 14,000 Canadians.

"To mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a number of significant remembrance events are taking place in our area and throughout the UK and Normandy today.

"It has been ten years since I had the honour of attending the 65th commemorations in‎ Normandy. We continue to show our gratitude to those who risked their lives for our freedom and must never forget their courage, commitment and sacrifice."
