Last Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the Burton Heritage Group’s BBQ at the tank ramp on the banks of the Trent. This area was used in World War 2 to develop solutions to crossing the Rhine and there a great deal of secret work went on in and around Burton. Apparently this stretch of the Trent was used because it resembled the Rhine in terms of depth, currents etc.
I had the pleasure to speak to two of the veterans of the work completed here in the war (see photo). One of them was assigned to look after Barnes Wallis who was also here developing technologies for the crossing. Amazing history and a really great event.
