Ministers Hear Humber Bridge Pleas

In an unprecedented visit to the Humber Bridge, Ministers from two Government Departments took the opportunity this week to meet with local businesses, Council Leaders, MPs and the Bridge Board to discuss the future of the Humber Bridge debt and tolls. Treasury Minister, Justine Greening MP, and Transport Minister, Norman Baker MP, heard strong representations about the negative impact the high tolls are having on the Humber region. The two Ministers also set out in more detail how the Treasur...

Keeping the Lights On!

Keeping the Lights On!

I had a great visit to the South Humber power station last Friday which is owned and operated by Centrica. Myself and Martin Vickers spent an enjoyable couple of hours touring the station and talking with local managers about the importance of local power stations and the future of energy generation locally.   The South Humber station is a gas fired power station located in Stallinbrough and was completed in two phases. I remember going on a school trip to one of the gas fired power stations i...

Andrew Backs Fish Fight Campaign

MP for Brigg & Goole Andrew Percy has given his backing to the ‘Fish Fight’ campaign to eliminate the environmentally and economically damaging practice of disregarding fish before landing. The Fish Fight campaign is alarmed that up to half of all fish trawled in the North Sea are thrown back either dead or dying because of European Union rules and calls on the Government to demand strong reform of the European Union Common Fisheries Policy. Mr Percy registered his anger in Parliament by...

Twitching at Blacktoft Sands and Goole High School

Twitching at Blacktoft Sands and Goole High School

I had a very busy constituency Friday last week with a number of meetings and visits stretching from Horkstow to Goole. I particularly enjoyed my visits to the RSPB managed wildlife reserve at Blacktoft Sands. Living not too far away, Blacktoft Sands is one of those places I drive by often but have never actually been too.   The site is of national importance and is clearly very well managed. I was told by Pete, the Site Manager, though that the recent freezing weather had taken a heavy toll w...

Mr Percy was seeking assurances that the Department of Education will be involved in a cross-departmental strategy and that it will concentrate on young people who commit crime, often due to mental health problems. The Secretary of State agreed with the points Mr Percy raised and said that he was examining ways in which the Government can divert more young offenders in particular out of the crimina...

Proposed Expansion of Brigg Tesco

Proposed Expansion of Brigg Tesco

I attended the Brigg Town Council meeting this week to hear the debate surrounding the proposal to double the size of the Tesco's store in Brigg. The proposal would also see Lidl relocated to Atherton Way with Tesco acquiring the current Lidl site for their expansion. The entrance to the new Tesco would be via Carey Lane.   It is fair to say that the proposal is receiving mixed reviews locally, with many traders especially concerned that the expansion does not take trade away from independent ...

Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy has written a formal submission to the Humber Bridge Board and the Department of Transport strongly opposing the proposed rise to £3 in the Humber Bridge Toll.
