Waterline Student Challenge 2021

Andrew was a guest speaker at the recent virtual Waterline Student Challenge event.

Andrew explained on his Facebook page, "I was delighted to take part in the inaugural Waterline Student Challenge event yesterday, which is a competition for students aged 11-18 to find solutions to environmental problems.

"The event yesterday was an opportunity to hear from the competition’s six finalist teams, who were selected by a panel of regional business representatives. Dozens of teams from schools and colleges across Hull, the East Riding, North and North East Lincolnshire submitted their innovative projects in the challenge’s inaugural year. These projects ranged from apps and games to new product ideas and presentations, addressing issues around recycling, minimising food waste, and water management.
Participating businesses included the Student Challenge Business Sponsor SSE Thermal, along with KCOM, Associated British Ports, Yorkshire Water, Ørsted, and Willerby Ltd.

"The finalist teams included:
•             Animal Water Savers, Bishop Burton College
•             Eco-Stepper Co., Malet Lambert School
•             Loyal Leaders, Engineering University Technical College Northern Lincolnshire
•             Team OEI, Malet Lambert School
•             Team Wilberforce, Wilberforce College

"I was delighted to announce the winner of the competition: RDUTC’s Sustainability Crew, Ron Dearing University Technical College (Catherine Crees and Jaden Taylor, who are included in the photos below). The team researched how much carbon emissions can be reduced by cycling to school instead of driving and created a carbon calculator to show users the impact they are having on the environment. Their findings were delivered in a presentation to all Year 10 students at the school.

"Once again, I would like to congratulate all the students who took part in this fantastic initiative and I wish them all the best of luck for the future."
