Snaith Housing Proposals

Andrew has posted a Facebook update on the Snaith housing proposals, which you can read below.

Andrew explains:

The application for what is now up to 160 homes by Bellway Homes is being considered by the East Riding Council today. Attached below is my letter to the Planning Committee on this setting out my concerns.

The site would see a new access off Pontefract Road and is the land immediately south of Punton Walk. Residents will remember that the proposal for 350 homes by Gladman homes was rejected recently and originally Bellway Homes were proposing over 500 new houses.

Some of this land is within the allocated land for housing in Snaith meaning it will be more difficult to refuse as there is land for about 120 new houses allocated in this area. This proposal would build that 120 plus 40 more which would include affordable housing.

There is a double edged sword in an application such as this. On the one hand, if the application is approved it would deliver the number of houses allocated for Snaith, making future applications potentially easier to reject and defend against, including possibly any appear against the refusal of the 350 houses recently. That is because if the Council can show the housing allocations and land supply have been met, it makes it harder for applications beyond those numbers to be approved. On the other though, the fear is always that smaller numbers are a gateway to bigger numbers in the future.

I play no formal role in planning applications and as our MP I am not even officially consulted on them, but I have submitted comments all the same and sent letters out to residents to encourage them to do so too.
