I was honoured to sign the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment in Parliament this week. This pledges a commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day, to honouring those who were murdered during the Holocaust, and to paying tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people today.
Holocaust Memorial Day falls on 27th January every year, which is the anniversary of the liberation of the infamous former Nazi
concentration and death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, in 1945.
In the lead up to and around Holocaust Memorial Day itself, thousands of commemorative events take place across the country, including by schools, faith groups and community organisations. In fact, I will be attending the Brigg Holocaust Memorial Service on Sunday afternoon.
The purpose of Holocaust Memorial Day is to remember all the victims of the Holocaust, along with those who have suffered during subsequent genocides, in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
We must keep their memories alive.
