Highways England Maintenance Work Update

Highways England (HE) have informed Andrew of their forthcoming essential maintenance work on the M180/M181/A180/A160.

HE have explained that they will be carrying out a series of schemes over the next 12 months on the above routes to help improve safety and provide smoother and safer journeys.

You can read this update below:

What are we doing?

•Resurfacing the M181 northbound carriageway

•Surfacing the M180 between junctions 3 and 4

•Replacing the roadmarkings and road studs at junction 5 of the M180

•Repairs to and resurfacing parts of the A180 carriageway

•Renewing some of the road studs and roadmarkings on the A160 between Brocklesby and Mamby

•Carrying out maintenance work on the bridge carrying Woad Lane over the A180

Why are we doing it?

The current surfacing is aging in these locations and essential maintenance is required along the routes to create a safer, smoother journey and to prolong the life of the carriageway and structures. This work has been programmed for this year to coincide with the work that is taking place along the M181 by North Lincolnshire Council so drivers don’t face disruption over a number of years.

When will this work take place?

We’re planning to start work on Monday 13 July 2020 on the M181 resurfacing improvements on the northbound carriageway. The rest of the work which will start from August onwards and be will be completed overnight when traffic flows are at their lowest.

Dates and times of the work may be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Where possible, we’ll keep you updated of significant changes.

What will the impact be?

To carry out the M181 resurfacing work we’ll be working overnight. We’ll also be closing the M180 junction 3 exit slip roads in both direction. Drivers travelling eastbound to Scunthorpe will leave the M180 at junction 2 travelling up the A161 to the A18 to Frodingham roundabout. Westbound traffic to Scunthorpe will be diverted off the M180 at junction 4 via the A18.

We have been working closely with North Lincolnshire Council to agree the diversion route and the ongoing programme so that drivers aren’t impacted too much and this will be clearly signed. We’ll continue to do this on the forthcoming schemes to ensure that the disruption is minimised where possible.

I have attached a leaflet which we will be issuing to residents and businesses along the route and the diversion route and we’ll keep them updated as each scheme progresses. We’ll also be doing some joint communications work with North Lincolnshire Council to ensure that we don’t cause any confusion for drivers, residents or businesses in the area.

In addition to the above work, we’re also working closely with North Lincolnshire Council on its plans to create a roundabout which will provide safe access to 60 acres of land given planning consent for commercial development, enabling the building of new homes and easing congestion in North Lincolnshire.

Urgent resurfacing work – M180

We would also like to inform you about some urgent repairs that we need to carry out for deep surface renewal and joint repairs on the M180 westbound carriageway between junctions 3 and 1 starting on Saturday 27 June. This is aimed to be complete by Sunday 19 July.

We’ll be carrying out this work overnight between 8pm and 6am using the following closures:

.          Full overnight closures westbound between junctions 3 to 1 from 27 June to 14 July

.          24/7 closures of westbound junction 2 entry and exit slip roads from Saturday 4 July to Tuesday 14 July

.          Single lane overnight running westbound between junctions 3 to 1 from Wednesday 15 July to Sunday 19 July

.          Single lane daytime running westbound between junctions 3 to 1 from Monday 29 June to Sunday 12 July

.          For safety there will be 50mph speed restrictions when the carriageway is down to a single lane

The diversion will be off the M180 at junction 3 following the A18 and re-joining the M180 at junction 1.
