Andrew Raises Flood Defence Funding Question at PMQs

Andrew took part in Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) to raise the issue of flood defence funding.

Following his question, Andrew added, "I got to raise the important issue of flood defence funding in Prime Minister's Questions today. As I pointed out to the PM, we are one of the most flood prone areas of the country and welcome the record flood defence funding the government has introduced, something I campaigned for.

"This funding is very much directed at 'capital' projects which means building new defences or upgrading current ones. This is of course welcome, but we also need to ensure that what goes on behind those defences also functions. So that means we need more flexibility to support maintenance and clearing of drainage ditches, dykes and pumping stations which are in the care of a range of bodies including Drainage Boards, the EA etc etc.

"Basically, the point of my question was to look at introducing more flexibility into how this money is allocated so that we can tailor solutions better to localities and allow more flexibility in how we spend it between maintenance and capital schemes. The PM seemed fairly open to that as an idea."
