Andrew Attends PM's Statement on Covid-19

Earlier today, Andrew took part in the Prime Minister's statement to the House on Covid-19. You can find a video of Andrew's question here: www.facebook.com/andrewpercyofficial

I spoke in the Commons today on the new measures introduced in England by the Government. As you will see, I expessed what I know will be some frustrations locally. Everybody these days appears to be an expert in infection control and in Covid, but the reality is that even the scientific community does not yet fully understand this virus, how it spreads and why it is spreading more in some communities and countries than others.

Wherever you look pretty much anywhere in the world, be it Canada Belgium or the UK, governments are constantly having to respond to the changing data with the flexing on and off of measures. Denmark has recently restricted its pubs and restaurants to 10pm in many areas, France has announced new measures, Spain has put parts of its country into effective lockdown again and Israel has gone back into a full second national lockdown and banned people going further than a few hundred yards from their own homes.

The Government here wants to avoid a second national lockdown and I hope these measures are enough. Lots of people have an opinion on this issue, some offer hindsight, others provide overly simplistic solutions that sound good but do not bear scrutiny. As I said today, few of us are actually epidemiologists, infection control experts or scientifically qualified enough to offer proper commentary on the virus.

As such, I continue to believe we have to be led by the science, but we also have to balance the other social, health and economic consequences of those actions. Trying to find that balance is a challenge for governments the world over. I get as frustrated as the next person on these issues, but I always temper that by reflecting that this is a changing and challenging situation to which there really is not one simple solution.
