Save Our Post Offices

Andrew is leading the campaign locally to save five Post Offices threatened by Labour's Post Office closure programme. West Butterwick, Eastoft, Wroot, Reedness and Westfield Avenue, Goole are all scheduled to close under Labour's programme of closing 2,500 more Post Offices nationally.

Labour have already closed 4000 Post Offices since coming to power, a quarter of the Post Office network.

How the Conservatives would protect our local Post Offices

Eastoft Post Office - under threat
  • Give sub-Post Offices more freedom to offer a wider range of business services
  • Push for more Post Offices to be "One Stop Shops" – trained staff could then advise on a range of matters including tax returns, pension entitlements, the opening hours of local pharmacies, how to apply for a disabled parking badge etc.
  • Encourage local Councils to open "Council Counters" in local branches
  • Allow the Post Office to work with carriers other than the Royal Mail

June Update

Despite having lost many of our local Post Offices, officials are warning that a further 4000 Post Offices could close when the Government renews the Post Office Card Account Contract.

Andrew says, "It's bad enough that Labour have closed so many Post Offices, now we are told that due to European Union rules which could affect the renewal of the Post Office Card Account, a further 4000 Post Offices could close.

The question local people are asking is, what have Labour got against our Post Offices?"

January Update

Andrew campaigning at
Westfield Avenue Post Office

The closure of Westfield Avenue Post Office in Goole was confirmed in mid-December. Sadly, despite huge support from local residents, just 100 words were devoted to Westfield Avenue in the final decision document.

More shocking was the decision to include Wrawby Post Office in the proposed closure list. Andrew started a campaign straight away and has received responses from a massive proportion of the village who are not only angry at the proposed closure, but also at the way in which Wrawby was added to the closure list months after the original list was published.

Andrew says, "The Government may not appreciate local Post Offices, but I and local people clearly do. I want to thank everyone who has supported my campaign and I can assure you that I will be continuing to campaign to protect these vital local resources."
