Following the recent announcement that Goole will benefit from up to £25 million of Government investment, Andrew met with the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick MP, to discuss the funding.
Goole is one of 100 towns that will be benefiting from the Government’s £3.6 billion Towns Fund. The aim of the funding is to transform the economic growth prospects of these towns with a focus on improved transport, broadband connectivity, skills and culture.
The Secretary of State informed Andrew that the Government will shortly be working with local councils to develop plans for this funding. Mr Jenrick also stressed that communities and other stakeholders will be playing a significant role in deciding how the funding will be allocated.
The Government will now publish the Towns Fund prospectus, which will outline how the fund will operate and what the next steps will be.
Following the meeting, Andrew said, “I pushed hard to get Goole this funding and the benefits of course will be felt across the whole of the Goole area. I had a very useful meeting with the Secretary of State to discuss how we can now maximise this funding for the town.
“During the meeting, I sought assurances that the consultation process will include the views of local people so that residents can feed in their priorities on how the money should be allocated. I was pleased that the Secretary of State was very clear that the views of both residents and other stakeholders will be fully utilized.
“For me, the main priorities would be to tackle the decline in the town centre along with encouraging and maximising entrepreneurship in the town. Moreover, I am especially keen for the funding to link with the investment coming to Goole 36.
“The next steps in the process will shortly be published in a Towns Fund prospectus. As soon as it’s clear what the next stages are, I’ll be sure to keep residents and stakeholders updated.
“This significant investment is proof that the new Conservative Government under Prime Minister Boris Johnson is ready to fire up the North and ensure that our area reaches its true potential.”
