Wind Farm Traffic Update

Prospective MP, Andrew Percy, recently met with representatives of Network Rail and British Waterways to discuss their involvement in helping to find a solution to the Keadby wind farm traffic problem. Andrew handed over 150 letters to Network Rail from local residents asking for their involvement and assistance.

Andrew Percy said: “I was delighted to be able to meet with senior representatives of both these organisations to explain to them in detail the exact nature of the problem and the strength of local feeling on this important matter. I explained to both organisations that it was important that everything possible was done to ensure that Swinefleet, Ealand, Eastoft and Luddington could spared from the horror of thousands of construction vehicles.

"In my meeting with the representatives of Network Rail, I handed over 150 letters from residents asking for their involvement. Since the meeting, I have received many more letters and the total now stands at over 220. Colette Fowler (pictured receiving the surveys) from Network Rail informed me that she had been asked to bring together a report on this issue and she informed me that the letters were very useful in demonstrating the strength of feeling locally.

"I also met with British Waterways whose involvement could be key. I was keen to express my belief that as much use as possible should be made of the canal for bringing in construction materials. This is a view which was expressed to me by many residents at the exhibitions held in Eastoft and Ealand a couple of weeks ago. I was informed that RES and British Waterways are looking into this option and I hope that it can be achieved.

"The various organisations involved in this issue will meet at a round table event in November to discuss this issue further. Myself and Cllr Caroline Fox have asked Ian Cawsey MP, who is hosting the event, for an invite to the meeting but despite waiting nearly a month we have received no communication from him.

"We all need to work together on this issue which is why I contacted Mr Cawsey before my meetings with Network Rail and British Waterways to ask if there is anything he wanted me to raise. The fact that we have not even received the courtesy of an acknowledgment suggests an unwillingness to work cross-party. I really hope Labour are not trying to act politically on this important issue."

Brigg Cancer Ball & Swinefleet Help for Heroes

As usual, it has been fairly crazy of late, so many invites to events and lots of people asking for home visits etc. Thank goodness it's the half term holidays and I'm off school. Today alone, I visited the Epworth Rural Day Centre, made two home visits and printed and arranged the stuffing of a 1000 or so targeted letters to residents on a number of issues.

I've had some really good events to go to of late for some very worthy causes. Two weeks ago I attened the Brigg and District Cancer Charity Ball (see photo) which was held in Broughton. The evening was really good fun and a lot of money was raised for this excellent local charity. Brigg Councillors Carl and Nigel Sherwood where there of course, with Nigel donating a bike to the charity auction.

Last friday, I also had the opportunity to support the Help for Heroes evening which was held at the Ship Inn, Swinefleet. Kerry and Darren previously ran the Goole Gift Campaign for Heroes before taking on the lease at the Ship Inn. It's good to see them continuing to support our troops. The photo attached shows me buying my heroes wrist band from Darren and Kerry's son and daughter, Jack and Georgia. The evening was a lot of fun, although a bit crazy for me as I had to teach all day, speak at an event in Brigg and then head over to Swinefleet, so I was pretty tired when I finally got back to my home in Airmyn at close to 1am.

I was already pretty tired from the evening before as I had been asked to take part in a Radio 5 panel discussion following the BNP's appearence on Question Time. I was the Conservative on the panel and Austin Mitchell MP was the Labour rep. I expected it to end at about 11.30pm so was pretty shocked when the presenter, Richard Bacon, announced we were there until 1am!

Humber Bridge Silliness

Arrived back from conference to see some silliness from my Labour opponent regarding the Tory position on the Humber Bridge. It is funny to watch how quickly people who claim to want an 'all party' solution to the Humber Bridge tolls issue suddenly descend into childish politicking.

Needless to say the truth of the situation is very different to what was reported. The Conservatives have certainly not closed down discussion on the bridge toll issue and in fact our Northern Transport Board is looking into the issue. There has been no ruling out of action on the tolls issue from a future Conservative government, in fact there is a pledge to engage with the campaign.

You should be seeing further Conservative action on the Humber Bridge issue in the coming weeks ...

Having just seen the details of some very specific local polling, it is fair to say that Labour's silly party political point scoring and nastiness is NOT going down well at all in Brigg and Goole, and I mean at all ...

More on the bridge issue in the coming weeks.

An Apology

I have not literally stopped for the past few weeks which explains my dreadful approach to updating my website! We have had so much on though that when I have had a spare moment I have used it to either get on the doorstep or get on the telephone to residents.

Plenty to report, some of which I am sure I have forgotten already! Plenty going on the in the past week or two though, including -

  • Eastoft and Ealand Wind Farm Meetings
  • Snaith Prostate Cancer Charity Dinner
  • Meeting with residents in Epworth regarding the proposed housing development. Lots and lots of contact from residents on this one.
  • Fundraising ball at Walcot as well as two fund-raising dinners, one in Barnetby and another today on the Isle.
  • Canvassing in Barnetby and one or two other places!!!
  • Meeting with residents in Westwoodside yesterday regarding an issue with the Council.
  • Visits to Burton regarding the latest on the wind farm which Labour Councillors have twice voted to support despite massive opposition.

That's just a few of the things I can remember and doesn't take account of the leafletting and other events I've been at! Oh and I have also been earning a living teaching! I am also getting more and more residents contacting me wanting our help which is great.

Anyway, I shall try and be better at keeping this website updated.

Wind Farm Traffic Meetings

Prospective MP Andrew Percy is to meet with Network Rail and British Waterways this week in a bid to help residents fighting plans to bring thousands of construction vehicles through Ealand Eastoft and Swinefleet. The vehicles are destined for the Keadby Wind Farm and will cause residents months, possible years of inconvenience.

Andrew Percy reports, "These proposals have already been rejected by the Council but the wind farm developers, RES Ltd, could re-submit them for consideration should they not be able to find an alternative route. The most appropriate route is for access directly off the A18 which was exactly what RES originally proposed.

However, this route requires the crossing of the railway and the canal and as such the agreement and involvement of Network Rail and British Waterways are required. RES Ltd tell us that up to now they have been able to get this agreement.

I want to help that agreement along as best as I can which is why I have arranged meetings this week with both Network Rail and British Waterways to encourage them to get involved in helping to unlock the route off the A18. This would save residents a great deal of worry and protect our local villages.

RES recently held exhibitions to discuss the routes issue in both Eastoft and Ealand. Cllr John Briggs(who represents Eastoft and Ealand) and Cllr Caroline Fox(who represents Swinefleet) joined me at these events where the message to RES was very clear: Do not come through our villages.

A solution to this will only be found by working together which is exactly what I plan to do. The Save Eastoft Campaign have done a cracking job of co-ordinating opposition to the proposals and it is now vital that the politicians use their links to put pressure on RES, Network Rail, British Waterways and others to get a solution to the A18 route."
